Why Now?

photo Legacy Land Trust imagines a future where the residents of the Houston area can benefit, directly and indirectly, from our connected conservation lands. Through the assistance of our members and supporters, we have been able to permanently protect more than 8,000 pristine acres. We live here, work, and raise our children here. We, like you, don’t want every tree felled, don’t want more concrete than green space surrounding us. We, like you, know that someone must work for the wildlife with no voice, who must have a “someplace else to go” in the midst of all the surrounding development. In this beautiful state one does not have to look far to see unacceptable alternatives. We can learn from the experience of those communities whose efforts to control inappropriate development failed. And we can pro-actively protect the most significant of the remaining natural spaces.

Did you know that two-thirds of North America’s bird species can be found somewhere in Texas during the year? Read about a hidden treasure in the Greater Houston area that is home to millions of birds throughout the year in Legacy Land Trust's Birder, Damien Carey's, Birdscape of Spring Creek (PDF, 300KB).
